Purpleheart: A Decade of Work, Refined

Some materials carry a story, not just in their grain or color, but in the hands that first shaped them. For me, Purpleheart has always been one of those woods.

I first worked with it in 2015. It was the first true hardwood I’d ever bought, dense, heavy, and strikingly vibrant. I remember picking up the board like it was something precious. My plan was to make a jewelry tray for my wife. 

That tray still sits on her dresser today. Looking back, it’s rough compared to what I create now, uneven edges, a few tool marks, and plenty of lessons learned. But it marks the beginning of everything that would become Lonoke Designs.

Working with Purpleheart taught me patience. Its density can be tough on tools, but the results speak for themselves: a naturally rich purple hue, smooth finish, and a weight that feels substantial and enduring. It’s a wood that reminds you good things take time.
